Car Sales January 2021: Maruti Suzuki Kick-Starts The Year With A Positive Growth Of 4.3 Per Cent

- Maruti Suzuki recorded a sales growth of 4.3 per cent in January 2021.
- Sales in the mini and compact segment remained subdued.
- The UV and compact sedan segment witnessed a healthy growth in sales.
Maruti Suzuki has started the year on a positive note when it comes to sales. India's largest carmaker has recorded an overall growth of 4.3 per cent when it comes to overall sales (domestic + exports) at 160,752 units sold in January 2021 as compared to 154,123 sold in the same period last year. That said, it's been more of a mixed for Maruti this month with the carmaker recording decline in multiple key segments, while some segments have witnessed exponential rise in sales, making up for the loss.

Sales of the mini and compact segment remained subdued.
Starting with passenger vehicles, the entry-level mini segment that has models like the Alto and S-Presso, has recorded a sales decline of 2.8 per cent at 25,153 units as compared to 25,885 units sold in the same month a year ago. Sales of popular models like the WagonR, Swift, Dzire, Baleno, Ignis and Celerio among others in the compact segment too have taken a plunge selling 76,935 units, which is a de-growth of 8.8 per cent when compared to 84,340 units sold in January last year. Surprisingly, sales of the Ciaz compact sedan went up by an impressive 61.3 per cent last month at 1347 units, but that is attributed primarily to a low base of 835 units last year. Now moving to the utility vehicle (UV) segment, Sales of UVs like the Vitara Brezza, S-Cross, Ertiga and XL6 among others surged by a good 45.1 per cent at 23,887 units as compared to 16,460 units (again a low base) sold in the same month last year. Sales of the Eeco van also took a dip in January of 5.2 per cent selling 11,680 units as compared to 12,324 units sold in the same month last year.

Maruti sales to other OEMs, where it supplies the Baleno dubbed Glanza and Vitara Brezza dubbed Urban Cruiser, too went up by 153.6 per cent at 5703 units as compared to 2249 units sold a year ago. The company's overall sales in the domestic market went marginally up by 2.6 per cent at 148,307 units against 144,499 units sold in the same period a year ago. As far as the company's exports are concerned, it went up by 29.3 per cent at 12,445 units as compared to 9624 units exported a year ago.
