Highlights

Electric vehicles are current flavour of town with multiple carmakers readying their contenders in this ever growing space. At present, the Indian market has a handful of EVs offered on sale. However, going forward, this number is expected to grow while many claim that 2022-23 will see the most number of EVs from major carmakers. So what better day than World EV Day to take a look at a few of the upcoming electric vehicles. Read on to know about when these electric vehicles arrive in India.

    Hyundai IONIQ 5

Hyundai will launch its IONIQ 5 electric crossover in the country by January 2023. Hyundai will mostly  locally-assemble the IONIQ 5 to keep the price aggressive against its sibling — the Kia EV6. We can expect Hyundai to bring the IONIQ 5 with a smaller 58 kWh battery pack to begin its journey in India. Globally, the electric car comes with a 58 kWh and a larger 72.6 kWh. Both battery packs can be specced with 2WD and 4WD drivetrain options, while the claimed range stands at 481 km. It produces 305 bhp of power and 605 Nm of peak torque.

Hyundai IONIQ 5 is set to be launched in January 2023.

    Mercedes-Benz EQB

Mercedes-Benz India is on an electric offensive, as the company recently launched its second electric product, the high-performance Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4Matic+ in the country at Rs. 2.45 crore (ex-showroom). As part of its electric onslaught, the Indian arm of the German carmaker will next launch the Mercedes-Benz EQB 7-seater electric SUV. In a recent interaction with car&bike, Martin Schwenk, MD & CEO, Mercedes-Benz India revealed that the new luxury electric SUV will arrive in India this festive season, as early as November this year.

The Mercedes-Benz EQB will be launched in India in this festive season.

    Mercedes-Benz EQS 580

Mercedes-Benz introduced the EQS AMG in the country earlier this month, with prices starting at Rs 2.45 crore (ex-showroom). The carmaker is now preparing to launch a locally assembled variant of its second electric offering for India, EQS 580. And it is coming next month. Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 will be powered by a 107.8 kWh lithium-ion battery pack paired with two electric motors, producing a total output of 523 bhp and 856 Nm of torque. The electric sedan is claimed to travel up to 770 km.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 will be launched next month.

    Mahindra XUV400

Mahindra's first mass production EV will make its way to the dealerships in 2023. Deliveries to customers will begin from the end of January 2023. In the first phase of deliveries, the XUV400 will cover 16 cities, including Mumbai, Hyderabad, Delhi-NCR, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad, Goa, Jaipur, Surat, Nagpur, Trivandrum, Nashik, Chandigarh and Kochi. Mahindra also claims that the XUV400 will have the  fastest acceleration time of 0-100 kmph in just 8.3 seconds. The XUV400 comes with a claimed top speed of 150 kmph, and maximum claimed range of 456 km on a single charge.

The XUV400 electric SUV is expected to hit the showrooms early next year.

    Tata Altroz EV

Tata has electric offerings in form of the Nexon EV and the Tigor EV. And while the Tata Altroz EV was supposed to be introduced much earlier, the global shortage of chips has forced the company to delay its market debut to either later this year or early next year. The Tata Altroz EV will be positioned above its petrol and diesel counterparts therefore we can expect the EV to come with a starting price of around Rs. 10 lakh in most cities. The Tata Altroz EV is claimed to deliver a range of 250-300 km on a single charge, which is similar to that of the Nexon EV. Moreover, it is also believed that the Altroz EV will share the rest of the powertrain with the higher-priced Nexon EV. The car is said to come with 245 Nm torque and 129 bhp.

The Tata Altroz EV is expected to arrive early next year.

    Tata Tiago EV

On World EV Day 2022, Tata Motors announced its next electric product. The Tata Tiago EV will be launched in the country later this month and will positioned below the Tigor EV in its lineup. There is little information on the model though going by the company’s existing portfolio, expect it to also get the company’s Ziptron electric vehicle architecture with the electric motor likely being the same as offered on the larger Tigor.

Tata Tiago EV will debut this month.

    Volvo C40 Recharge

After the Volvo XC40 Recharge, the company is set to launch the C40 Recharge next year. It is based on the XC40 Recharge, and will be the second all-electric model for the carmaker in India. It comes with a single electric motor developing 231 bhp and 330 Nm of torque that's delivered to the front wheels. The Plus and Ultimate trims with its  dual-motor set-up develops 408 bhp and 660 Nm of torque. The single-motor, with a 67 kWh battery, has a 430 km range on the WLTP cycle, while the dual-motor, with a 75 kWh battery, has a range of 433 km.

The Volvo C40 will arrive in 2023.
