F1: Daniel Ricciardo Pips Rosberg to Win the Canadian Grand Prix

In India, if you switched your television on to see the Canadian Grand Prix, which started late night, to watch the start, it was a typical race where both the silver arrows spearheaded the attack to earn their victory in the race. However, if you fell asleep thinking that this was just another easy win for Mercedes, well you missed one cracker of a race.

 

It was Red Bull driver, Daniel Ricciardo, who took his maiden F1 victory by passing Nico Rosberg in the final three laps of a thrilling Canadian Grand Prix. Having lead from the start, both the Mercedes cars hit trouble and were down on power. The lead of more than 10 seconds was slowly and surely being eaten into by the others behind. Rosberg was down on power but holding off Sergio Perez for numerous laps with both Red Bulls and Felipe Massa behind.

 

Ricciardo passed Perez five laps from the end and he then set his eyes on the Mercedes. He passed Rosberg using DRS to take the win. The race, however, ended under the safety car as Perez and Massa collided at the start of the final lap at Turn 1.

 

Rosberg held on to second place ahead of Sebastian Vettel - who just managed to avoid the Perez/Massa crash

 

Both Mercedes cars suffered a loss of power on lap 37 and their times in the middle sector immediately dropped off. Lewis Hamilton retired with brake trouble two thirds in to the race.

 

Vettel was inches away from being collected in the incident involving Massa and Perez but came home third. Jenson Button was promoted to fourth ahead of Nico Hulkenberg and Fernando Alonso. Bottas could manage seventh place while Jean-Eric Vergne, Kevin Magnussen and Kimi Raikkonen rounded out the top ten.
