Highlights

  • Red Bull believes that it could get Hamilton a more severe penalty
  • Hamilton got a 10-second penalty for his crash but still won the race
  • The crash meant that Hamilton closed the gab on Verstappen massively

Red Bull has come out and said that the new evidence that it has produced in front of the FIA will change the verdict against Hamilton who was handed a 10-second penalty for crashing into Max Verstappen at the British GP.

The crash which caused a 51G impact made sure Verstappen had to pay a visit to the hospital and has cost Red Bull $1.8 million which is a significant cost considering the budget cap that's been introduced for the first time in the sport.

We will "Bring new facts that were not available to us at the time of the race interruption or when the whole thing was dealt with," said Helmut Marko the head of the Red Bull driver programme.

"Those facts will be brought forward on Thursday, and we hope that that will [result in] a reassessment because we still think that this penalty was too lenient for Hamilton," Marko added stating that the penalty for Hamilton was so lenient that he still managed to win the race given the pace advantage the Mercedes had over the rest of the field.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner called Hamilton's contact with Verstappen a professional foul and deemed the move amateurish and desperate. It triggered a war of words between Verstappen and Hamilton fans with some resorting to racial vilification of the Briton.

"A penalty that would have prevented a victory would be appropriate. So drive-through or a ban at the next race, something along those lines. But that's up to the stewards. First of all, we are very happy that this reopening has happened. And we will now see how they judge it. But I think that what we bring forward will put it in a slightly different light," said Marko explaining what would be an appropriate penalty for the 7-time world champion.

Verstappen himself called Hamilton's excessive celebrations unsportsmanlike in view of his injury and accident. No matter what happens, this weekend will be full of fireworks.

In case Hamilton's banned or his penalty is retrospectively increased, it could tilt the stakes of the world championship and could also hand Charles Leclerc a win for the British GP.
