The all-new Skoda Kodiaq SUV is set to be launched in India and this will be one of the most important launches from the Czech carmaker this year. Set to be the first seven-seater SUV from Skoda, the new Kodiaq will compete in India with the likes of Toyota Fortuner, Ford Endeavour, Isuzu MU-X and even the Volkswagen Tiguan, despite the last one being a five-seater SUV. We have already driven the new Skoda Kodiaq and were very impressed with what the SUV has to offer. For now, the Kodiaq will only be locally assembled in India and not produced entirely so the price tag will be somewhere around Rs. 30 lakh (ex-showroom). Powertrain wise, the Skoda Kodiaq will be offered with only one engine option - a 2-litre DQ500 diesel engine that makes about 148 bhp at 3,500-4,000 rpm and develops peak torque of 340 Nm at 1,750-3,000 rpm. The oil burner comes mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox and for now, there'll be no manual transmission on offer.

The new Skoda Kodiaq is based on the company's versatile MQB platform, and the SUV shares its underpinnings with the Volkswagen Tiguan. Having said that the Kodiaq being a seven-seater is longer at 4,697 mm, wider at 1,882 mm, and even taller at 1,676 mm and comes with a wheelbase of 2,791 mm. At the same time, the ground clearance is also pretty decent at 187 mm, which is better than the Tiguan's 149 mm.

Visually, the Kodiaq SUV employs the company's latest crystalline design language, which is now commonly seen in all new-generation Skoda cars like the Superb and the Octavia. Sharp lines, creased metal and very layered, bejewelled lighting elements, give the new Kodiaq quite an imposing look. At the same time, on the features front, the Kodiaq loaded with a host of comfort and smart features like all-LED headlamps, LED daytime running lights, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED taillamps and more. The cabin, on the other hand, gets a more luxurious treatment with a well laid-out dashboard with soft-touch plastic and wooden panels. The centre stage is taken by large 8-inch capacitive touchscreen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Other features include ambient lighting, hands-free park-assist, electric sunroof, and more.

Skoda takes its safety a bit too seriously. The Kodiaq gets 9 airbags as standard (first in its segment) along with a host of features such as ABS, ESP, traction control, all-round parking sensors, and reverse-parking camera. Plus, the European Skoda Kodiaq did get a 5-star rating from Euro NCAP too.
