Audi Celebrates the 25th Anniversary of itsTDI Engine

Highlights
Audi is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the TDI engine and what better way to do it than unearth the history of this iconic powerplant. This is the engine that powers156 TDI models except the R8.
The TDI engine was originally introduced at the 1989 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 2.5-litre TDI 5-cylinder engine that produced 118bhp and 265Nm. The Audi 100 became the first car to receive this engine; the engine endowed the car with a top-speed of 200Km/h and a fuel-economy figure of 5.7l/100Km.
Yes, it was a bit thirsty back then but has improved by vast measures over the past 25 years. Audi says it has seen its power and torque - relative to displacement - increase by over 100 per cent, while emissions have fallen by 98%.
Also, Audi couldn't help but mention the fact that a plug-in hybrid with a TDI engine is in the works and will arrive in the market soon. Can't wait!
