Explained: Audi’s Steering Column-Mounted Controls For Indicators & Wipers In The New Q3 SUV

Audi recently unveiled the latest iteration of the Q3 SUV.  Now in its third generation, the all-new Q3 gets a raft of changes which include an all-new design (exterior and interior) in line with newer models from Audi, in addition to a range of new features. However, the most talked about bit in the new SUV might be its new layout for the indicator and windshield wiper controls. The Q3 ditches the traditional ‘stalks’ for steering column-integrated buttons, which has received mixed responses.

While we’re majorly used to having the controls on either side of the steering wheel, the Audi has the controls for both the indicators and windshield wipers on the left side of the wheel. How is this possible? The module on the left side consists of buttons for indicators which can be operated by moving the controls up and down, while the wipers are turned on by pressing a central button on the outer edge of the module. A knob can be turned to increase the wiper’s intensity accordingly, while the rear wipers can now be engaged by a button situated towards the side of the knob. The high beam, meanwhile, can be activated by pressing the outer edge of the module. The right module meanwhile, now consists of the controls for the gear selector and can be used to put the vehicle in Drive, Park, Neutral or Reverse modes.

Audi’s explanation for this change is that the newly integrated controls free up more space in the centre console. As a result, the new Q3’s centre console features two cup holders, and a cooled charging tray with 15 watts of charging power including two USB-C ports.

The Q3 will initially go on sale in European nations

A few other new features on the Q3 include a panoramic display housing an 11.9-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch central touchscreen, digital Matrix LED headlights, and more advanced ADAS functions. The new ADAS system is capable of offering active support at a speed of up to 210 kmph, assisted lane change at speeds in excess of 90 kmph, and has an Emergency Assistant, which can now self-steer the car to the shoulder of the road should the driver become unresponsive. The system also provides auditory, visual and haptic warnings, including brake jolts before pulling over to the side of the road and calling emergency services if the driver fails to respond.
 

Audi has stated that the new Q3 will go on sale in European markets later this year. The model is also expected to subsequently be offered in other markets. The India launch, however, is likely to take place sometime in 2026.
