Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has announced that the FASTag-based annual pass scheme will come into effect from August 15, 2025. The annual pass scheme has been under discussion for some time now, looking at offering frequent highway users the option of a single lump-sum payment for multiple trips on national highways over a set period of time.

For now, the scheme will only cover non-transport or privately owned light passenger vehicles, with the annual pass set to cost Rs 3,000. As the name suggests, the pass will be valid for a period of 1 year or for a maximum of 200 trips, whichever is earlier, before requiring vehicle users to resubscribe for the pass.
One trip is equal to crossing one toll booth.
Users will be able to activate or renew their annual passes via a dedicated link made available on the NHAI and MoRTH websites or via the Rajmarg Yatra mobile app. The link will be made available on the platform closer to the launch of the annual pass.

Tweeting about the imminent launch of the service, Gadkari said that the Annual Pass ‘addresses long-standing concerns regarding toll plazas located within a 60 km range and simplifies toll payments through a single, affordable transaction.’ He added that the move to an annual pass would also help ease congestion at toll plazas, allowing for a faster and smoother intercity travel.

Currently, highway users do get the option for a monthly pass at toll booths based on their FASTag, though this is only applicable for a single toll plaza.
