Highlights

  • Mitsubishi previews upcoming crossover MPV with the new XM concept
  • The vehicle has a heavy influence of the eX concept revealed in 2015
  • Mitsubishi claims that the XM delivers high all-terrain performance
When you read the 'XM' nomenclature, I am sure that the first thing you thought about was Citroen, right? Well Citroen in fact retired that moniker in 2000 but it's Mitsubishi that's bringing it back. It's acting as a sneak preview for a model that'll be built in Indonesia soon. It's called the XM Concept and according to the folks at Mitsubishi, it's a mixture of crossover and MPV. There's a heavy influence of the eX, which we've seen in 2015, but it's not exactly a carbon copy of the eX concept.

The XM seems to be larger and comes with bigger side windows. The pair of rood rails too add to the added attraction and the side cameras have been repositioned and now sit at the base of the A-pillars. We know it's a seven-seater because the company says that the XM is a 'crossover MPV conceived to ideally suit to large or extended families featuring a wide body and an optimized layout to provide generous interior space that allows seven occupants to relax in comfort.' So, yes, three rows of seating.

There are no shots of the interiors that have been revealed but the company does state that the horizontal dashboard accentuates the breadth of an MPV. Together with the wide elevated center console, black/white high-contrast interior coloring, and silver accents the interior reflects a refined look.

It's also unclear what powers the crossover/MPV concept but we can expect it to be similar to the eX concept - an electric motor and all-wheel drive. Mitsubishi says that the XM delivers 'high all-terrain performance,' so expect it to have high ground clearance too. We'll get to see the production version of the car in 2017 and it'll be produced in the company's factory in West Java, Indonesia.
