  • Lewis Hamilton suffered from back ache due to porpoising in Baku.
  • Hamilton was rumoured to miss the Canadian GP due to his back issues.
  • He shut down these rumours by tweeting and posting on Instagram.

7-time Formula 1 World Champion Lewis Hamilton has been vocal about the issues of porpoising or 'bouncing' in his latest F1 car, the Mercedes W13 right from the start of the season. The issue has been more violent on some race tracks more than the others, and the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend was one such time where the Baku City Circuit's bumpy nature amplified the bouncing problems. Due to this, Hamilton struggled throughout the entire duration of the Grand Prix with back problems, and was visibly in pain after the race.

When asked if Hamilton could end up missing the Canadian GP coming up next weekend due to the pain, Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff responded "Yeah, definitely. I haven't seen him and I haven't spoken to him afterwards, but you can see this is not muscular anymore. I mean, this goes properly into the spine and can have some consequences."

This lead to a series of rumours surrounding the fact that Lewis Hamilton could in fact miss the Canadian GP, but Hamilton swiftly responded on his social media handles, shutting down any speculation about him missing the Grand Prix. "No time like the present to pull together and we will. I'll be there this weekend, wouldn't miss it for the world", Hamilton communicated via an Instagram story.

During the pre-season test, George Russel had suggested that if the FIA allow active suspension - a tech that was banned in 1994 - every team could easily solve the problem of porpoising. While this solution initially wasn't accepted well as FIA didn't want any system that aided drivers, it is now considering an active suspension proposal as porpoising is increasingly becoming a safety issue, and the violent bouncing can also result in incidents, if not just the body aches. What solutions do the teams and FIA come up with and implement to counter this problems remains to be seen.
