Most Successful Teams in Formula One History With The Most Constructors Championships

Ever since the inception of the tournament almost seven decades ago, more than a hundred teams have sent cars to participate in the World Championship to clinch the prestigious trophy. Out of these teams, only fifteen teams have managed to achieve the feat. The fact that only fifteen teams have managed to take home the F1 Constructors Championship so far clearly states that one needs more than a fast four-wheeler to win the race. The “teamwork that makes the dream work” includes the efforts of designers, racers, pit-crew members and management. Here is a look at some of the most successful teams who have won the trophy more than once.

7 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES – MERCEDES

Mercedes so far has managed to accumulate a total of seven championship titles (2015-2020). Post the 1995 tragedy that took place, Mercedes announced that they would shut down their company's racing division and would never make a comeback as a constructor until the year 2010. However, they have become unstoppable, especially since they took in Lewis Hamilton as the lead driver.

7 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES – LOTUS

Another team to have 7 championship titles in their cabinet besides Mercedes is Lotus (1963, 1965, 1968, 1970, 1972-73, 1978). Colin Chapman, the renowned engineer, gave rise to an exemplary car that dominated the 1960s as well the early 1970s with unrivalled support from the icon Enzo Ferrari. Further assistance was also provided by Ford as well as Cosworth to improve the vehicles' aerodynamics.

8 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES – McLAREN

The luxury supercar manufacturer is hailed as the best Formula One constructor who has successfully clinched 8 titles (1974, 1984-85, 1988-1991, 1998). They occupy the second position in the list of driver's titles with a total of 12 titles. Emerson Fittipaldi was the one who got McLaren their first-ever title. The last one was won by Lewis Hamilton.

9 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES – WILLIAMS RACING

Williams Racing is the second one in the list of the teams with the most championship titles, with a total of nine trophies (1980-81, 1986-87, 1992-94, 1996-97). The Williams Racing Team was a dominant force in the late 1880s and throughout the 1990s. Their success was spearheaded by Patrick Head, technical director and co-founder of Williams Racing who teamed up with legendary engineer Adrian Newey to design race cars that rivalled that of McLarens. This led to a successful 5 year run with Williams winning several grand prix and their drivers winning titles.

16 CHAMPIONSHIP TITLES – SCUDERIA FERRARI

The only team in the history of Formula One to have won the Constructors Championship Titles a whopping 16 times, Scuderia Ferrari was a force to reckon with back in the day (1961, 1964, 1975-77, 1979, 1982-83, 1999-2004, 2007-08). Even though it has been a bit of a dry spell for the iconic team since 2009, they can pop up any time soon.

These five teams have been a powerful force in the renowned international racing championship. Many teams will come and go but these teams have forever gotten their name registered in the list of the greatest teams of all time.
