Highlights

We'd told you about Pininfarina bringing in a concept car at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show and well, here it is. This is the same design house in which Mahindra has acquired a controlling stake of 76.06 per cent and the concept is the first one after the acquisition. Pininfarina and GreenGT have unleashed the H2 Speed concept which is basically a hydrogen powered race car.

The name itself suggests this as 'H2' is the chemical formula of hydrogen gas, while the 'Speed' suffix tells us that the car is meant for the race track. Though we'd seen the teaser and we knew from the beginning that the car will find its home on a race track, but now we can confirm that the sleek body and the high level of aerodynamic efficiency just helps in pushing the car to the max when it comes to performance.

Mind you, the H2 Speed, will sprint across the track while emitting only water vapour. According to the folks at Pininfarina, it has taken inspiration from previous racing cars, but added a futuristic twist by coming out with a vehicle described as being halfway between a competition prototype and a production supercar.

While Pininfarina took care of designing the cars, it was GreenGT who was in charge of developing the powertrain. It uses two race-spec electric motors which work together with a lightweight fuel cell and a brake energy recuperation system. According to GreenGT, it has managed to develop the most powerful electric-hydrogen fuel cell powertrain group in the world. It motivates the H2 Speed concept which at the same time demonstrates Pininfarina's vision of a futuristic alternatively-powered track car.

It's good to see alternative fuel being tapped to make cars that can equal the fun of their petrol/diesel powered cousins. We can only hope for more such ideas to be explored and introduced soon.
