As the country goes back and forth over the feasibility of the Delhi government's proposal for the alternate-days rule for plying of vehicles in the streets, Gopal Rai, Delhi Transport Minister, said that government will present a "full proof plan" before December 25. Other than the odd-even proposal, the Delhi government is also looking to further strengthen the public transport system via the introduction of more buses and increasing the frequency of Metro trains. Mr Rai said they will approach DMRC and Delhi Traffic Police to figure out a strategy.

Meanwhile, a Steering Committee of the Delhi government held a meeting regarding the implementation of the odd-even number formula for the plying of private vehicles in the national capital. The Committee has prepared a detailed report on the implementation of the formula. Interestingly, even as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has urged people to give the 'odd-even' rule a fair chance, Delhi Police officials say that the are yet to be approached for assistance with the enforcement of the aforementioned rule.

Delhi has been struggling to deal with the sharp rise in pollution levels, and has received several warnings from the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the Delhi High Court among others. In fact, the Delhi HC has asked the centre to phase out all diesel taxis from the National Capital Region.

The Court has instructed app-based taxi services for a list of their entire fleet of operating vehicles with the intention to implement a successful phasing-out of all diesel cabs by 1 March, 2016. After the deadline, the cab companies will have to make the switch to CNG.
