Highlights

  • Avenger 220 Street name recently part of a type approval document
  • Model was originally discontinued in 2020 only to relaunch in 2023
  • Currently not listed on Bajaj's website

The Bajaj Avenger range could be in line to receive an update, with a recent type approval document filed by Bajaj hinting at the return of the Avenger 220 Street variant. The document listed the 220 Street as a variant of the Avenger 220 Cruise and it could very well be resurrected once again.

In recent times, the Bajaj Avenger has been sold in India in two displacements – 160 and 220 cc, across two variants – Cruise and Street, although the original Avenger also had a 180 cc version.  The Avenger line-up over the past year has been reduced to just the 160 Street and the 220 Cruise. The 220 Street originally bowed out in 2020, apparently die to low demand, only to be reintroduced again in 2023. After this, the model again seemed to silently disappear into the woodwork with the variant delisted from Bajaj’s website.

The difference between the 220 Street and 220 Cruise included both cosmetic and ergonomic elements, with the latter featuring spoke wheels, more chrome elements and taller handlebars & a fly-screen for the long-distance cruiser aesthetic. The Street, on the other hand, looked to prioritise urban riding with lower-set handlebars, minimal use of chrome and a small fly-screen atop the headlamp. The Street also featured alloy wheels for additional differentiation.

The type approval document says that the 220 Street is about 72 mm lower overall compared to the Cruise, though the rest of the dimensions are pretty much identical. The document also mentions that the Street has a 3 kg lower gross vehicle weight compared to the Cruise. Moving to the engine, the document says that the 220 cc mill develops 18.77 bhp at a peak 8,400 rpm. The engine is also E20 and OBD-2B compliant.

It, however, remains to be seen if the 220 Street will indeed be relaunched in the market or if the type-approval certification is only to ensure that the model could be introduced at a later stage if Bajaj feels there's enough market demand for it.
